I work with clients every day who can describe in intimate detail how their inner 'critic' or 'critical committee' puts them down. Keeps them feeling small and unworthy. Keeps them stuck and unable to move forward. I remind people that we all have many, many parts. Call them inner voices, complexes...archetypes - parts!
And I know that there is the critical 'part' in all of us. Without the critic our species would not have survived.
And yet, where is the 'part' that says "good job, you did your best...just try again. Good enough."
It occurred to me during a walk that I do not emphasize or point out to clients that 'part'. I certainly talk about compassionate kindness toward yourself. Saying silently kind words. Finding those things that are soothing and calming around us. Helping our bodies move toward balance and relaxation.
But I have never really identified that voice, that kindness as a 'part' of who we are.
So most of you will know, intimately, the critic. I challenge you to reflect on the 'part' of who that is your champion. The 'part' of you who speaks well of you, who reminds you to slow down, put your hand on your heart and breathe...to allow yourself to just be and feel as if you have done enough. That you ARE enough.
The next time the critic comes roaring in, be prepared with the good, the champion, your #1 fan! What would that 'part' of you say to the critic?
