Are you having trouble regulating your nervous system? Fight or flight 'got control' of you? Or freeze?
One of the things we know about self-regulation is that YOU CANNOT THINK YOUR WAY OUT OF IT.
When your body senses 'danger', whether real, perceived or imagined, you body will respond with fight/flight or freeze. IT is AUTOMATIC! Your body is trying to keep itself alive.
AND...in either fight/flight or freeze your BRAIN GOES OFFLINE. LIKE 'CLICK'...OFF.
So when you are learning to self-regulate, you cannot think your way into calm because your brain is clicked off.
What can you do? Well this is the good news...almost anything physical. Look at the list above. Physical...ice, hugs, warmth, weather, walks...
I always ask my clients to find 5 things that really work for them when they are learning to self-regulate and write them down. A list on the phone, refrigerator...bathroom mirror?
Try it...see if it helps you regulate your body into a place where your pre-frontal cortex kicks in and you can think. THINK!
