I have been talking a lot lately with clients about staying present. Staying - mind and body - in the moment. Feeling your feet on the ground. Breathing. Again and again. Breathing deeply into the body. Using calming techniques to stay present and to nurture, comfort and soothe yourself.
When we are out of balance, either in fight/flight or freeze, we cannot think. Literally our brain has gone 'off line', like a computer. We do not have the capacity the stay grounded. To nurture ourselves. To even respond to whatever has knocked us off our feet and into either end of the autonomic nervous system.
Breathe. Feel your feet on the ground. Stay present. And from there, a place of being grounded and centered, can we respond from our higher, wiser self.
