I love my clients. Why? Because it takes courage to call me, to contact me and tell me what is not working. What they need help with. To open up, be vulnerable and reveal the secrets that they may have kept hidden for years. Or a lifetime.
I recently worked with a few clients who had 'taken on' feelings or beliefs from their families' that were only partially their own. As children we 'take in' or introject many things from our parents and the people around us: beliefs, needs, values, behaviors...shame, fears, anxiety. This IS one of the ways we learn to survive as children. We adapt. We take on. We transform who we are to survive - often literally. At the very least at a soul level. Here is a definition of introject:
"Introjection, one of many defense mechanisms posited by Sigmund Freud, occurs when a person internalizes the ideas or voices of other people."
Now this might seem a bit farfetched, but think about it for yourself: how many of the beliefs you have now are fully your own? Partially your own? How many of the feelings such as shame, fear, sadness...even ambivalence or resistance...are often partially someone else's.
So how to work with this? First recognize that there is an issue and in my world, heal this in hypnotherapy using imagery, color, symbols and action that clearly defines ownership. It might be a pile of rice that a person separates..this is theirs..this is mine. Or using colors: their anger is red, mine is blue. Have the client find all the red in their body...energetically and internally..and literally breathe out the color/emotion that does not belong to them!
I have seen amazing results when a client engages in this process: lightness, clarity, a feeling of being 'free' of something they have been carrying, literally, for years.
