I have a belief about therapy: my job is to help a client learn new tools, re-think old ways of thinking, develop skills for living so that the client can be in the world happier, more fulfilled, less anxious and depressed.
My job is not to keep a client coming to see me. My job is to help clients get better so their lives are better.
To that end it is important to me that your time and money are used wisely.
These are some questions I like my clients to ask:
Are our sessions helping you outside of the office?
Can you begin to feel a difference in how you are in the world, whether it is in relationships, at work or with yourself.
Are you able to self-regulate, coming back to a state of balance when your mind begins to spin or spiral?
Do you feel better about yourself?
Are you able to let go of old beliefs or ideas that have been 'hurting' you in some way?
Is your life better overall?
If the answers are yes...and these changes take work so don't think I wave a magic wand and you are healed...great! We are on the right track.
If the answer is NO..then please let me know so we can change course. It might be, too, that I am not the best person to help you. Let's find someone who can.
It is my job to do the best I can with and for you. It is your job to let me know if it is working or not!
