What does that mean: to be a beginner? For me it means having an open mind to new ideas, new ways of thinking and being. Not falling back on old ideas of what things 'should' be...but trying, with new eyes, to see things as they are.
This is not easy. Trying to be or have a beginner's mind during a pandemic has been both good and bad. Good in the sense that so many things seem 'new' or unfamiliar. So having an open mind has helped me not get stuck with old ways, old 'shoulds'. This is good. But also bad because there is part of me that has resisted...still resists...things changing. Things NOT being the way they were.
So...like all new ideas, I try to have patience with myself. At the beginning of our COVID sheltering one of my teachers sent us an article that has helped me as we moved into the descent and spent time in the slough. And hopefully, they will help as we emerge into...something new and different.
These guideposts have been: seeing and expressing gratitude, keeping my heart open, having humility and adopting beginner's mind.
