We are interesting human beings. At the most difficult times in our lives we often expect ourselves to function perfectly 'normally'. We push. We work hard. And harder. We stress and strain and worry...and often things just get worse. We get more tired, more angry, feeling more isolated.
So I often remind clients NOT to make major decisions, not to live every day in a state of anxiety and stress. To notice their bodily needs, like hunger. To eat. Sit down and eat. Enjoy your food. Relax and breathe. Feel the comfort in your body of feeding not only your tummy but your entire system.
To release the anger they are feeling through writing, expression, activities like working out, riding a bike, walking briskly or running. To release!
When we get into these difficult places, we often feel alone. Cut-off from those we love. Convinced we are all alone and have to figure out or solve our issues all by ourselves. Reach out. Call someone you love. Ask for some reassurance like a hug or an affirmation of who you really are.
And lastly, take a break. A self-care break. Go outside. Lie down. Take a nap. Find something interesting to read. Watch some streaming on-line movie or documentary. TAKE A BREAK.
Paste these four steps somewhere you might need them. And also post what and how you will take care of yourself with each step. And more, as you feel you need. There are a lot more emotions we all deal with all of the time. How will you take care of yourself the next time these emotions not only come up, but seem to overwhelm you?
