It occurs to me that right now, with this COVID-19 virus moving through the world causing illness and death, that right now is the time to always be 'beginning'.
Here is an explanation from the website Approaching Life with Beginner's Mind: zenhabits.net/beginner/
"What is beginner’s mind? It’s dropping our expectations and preconceived ideas about something, and seeing things with an open mind, fresh eyes, just like a beginner. If you’ve ever learned something new, you can remember what that’s like: you’re probably confused, because you don’t know how to do whatever you’re learning, but you’re also looking at everything as if it’s brand new, perhaps with curiosity and wonder. That’s beginner’s mind."
So how can we proceed with beginner's mind: we don't know what is coming. We don't know what to expect further out than maybe a week. So much has changed in just the last few days: closures, schools, bans on large gatherings. We don't know what we don't know.
What we do know is that we are in new times, new ways of living. Maybe things will change forever, and maybe they will only change for a while.
And in the midst of these huge and sweeping changes can you remember to try looking at everything as if it's brand new. Can you look around you at the world, at your life and relationships with new eyes? With curiosity?
I know that in 3 days the way I work this week has completely changed: I will be doing all appointments online for the first time. I am curious as to who will want to try this with me. I am curious as to how it will go.
I also felt inspired to offer - at least for tomorrow night - a free guided calming meditation via Zoom. About 20 minutes of...calm, quiet reflection.
If you are having lots of trouble staying present, feeling grounded and focused on the present moment, maybe I can help. Online this week. Or maybe you can listen to one of my guided meditations as a way to relax, calm and soothe: www.youtube.com/user/zoewaggoner/featured
