I saw a new client yesterday. A young woman full of life and zest who is having trouble with her body. Her practitioners - a rolfer and a massage therapist - both say her body is basically healthy and yet her mind seems to keep her in a constant state of fight/flight.
She wanted to learn to do TRE - Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises: traumaprevention.com As we talked I found out that she has had a series of traumatic things happen to her and that she has always just 'kept on going'. Through losses and betrayals. She 'kept on going'. And now her body was not letting her keep on going. Her body was rebelling and every time she felt the sadness and grief and betrayal and resentment arise, she stopped herself from crying. From feeling and 'kept on going'. This lovely woman is learning that her body/soul/mind and heart can only take so much. That stuffing down, 'going on' only works so long. And for each person that turning point is different. I have seen first-hand how stress and that cultural mantra - just keep on going - has hurt two people I care about: one with a heart attack and the other so stressed and burned out they are taking a medical leave. Both intelligent and lovely people who did not foresee the future, did not foresee their bodies' rebelling and, in essence, stopping. Whatever it is you do for yourself, remember that when you just 'keep on going' your entire system suffers. You suffer. Don't do it. And if you need help changing your ways, your thinking, your life, call/text me. I can help. 360-432-1236
