Comparing Yourself to Others

A person dear to me told me recently that they do not like to look at Facebook because all they do is compare themself to others: travel, happy relationships, good jobs, wonderful food. I asked if this person's life was not also good: trips, friends, good job....? They said yes, but somehow looking at the posts on Facebook made them question their own life much more harshly.

One meaning of compare is "to examine or look for the difference between two or more things".
When we begin to not only look for the differences between ourselves and others, but then judge ourselves more harshly, I believe it has a lot to do with our self worth.

Ask yourself the next time you start to compare yourself to someone else: is that really true, that they have, or are, or seem to have...more? Can I look realistically at what seems to trigger me about this issue?

Because we don't ever really know what others are going through. Facebook is a place where people can post whatever they want - true or not. Where lives can be made to look so much better than they might be.

So the next time you find yourself comparing, ask yourself: do I know that what I am comparing myself to is real or fabricated? What is really good about me and my life? Just try it and see if it helps you shift from comparison to compassion for yourself.
