I have a client who has been seeing me for about 9 months. He came in really, really anxious and wanting to feel better.
He worked hard. We tapped frequently which he found helpful, he read and found helpful resources.
He had a really hard time with his breath being disregulated or uneven, waking up in the middle of the night panicking and not being able to breathe. We traced his difficulty breathing to his womb experience when his Mom smoked up to three packs of cigarettes a day. A baby dealing with toxins in the womb - the smoke - finds way to cope, often 'sort of shutting down' their breathing through the umbilical cord. Ok in the womb, but once in the world this little one exhibited breathing difficulties as a baby and child. And adult.
So he realized his BODY had never really felt safe and he worked to feel - in his body - more calm, safe sensations.
So after all this work he told me the other day about a book he is reading called "Breath" and related a breathing technique that really works!
I stopped him and reflected on this: when he came in to see me he would not have been physically and emotionally able to do a breathing exercise. Doing that kind of exercise would have created panic upon panic.
Congratulate yourself, I said! This is progress: you finding the exercise and making it work for you is new. Congratulate yourself for your hard work and your progress!
