Throughout time the 'breath' has been used by shamans and wise people to alter states and create healing. And yet today, using the breathe to relax and slow down is actually scary to some people.
So although it is a great tool for relaxing the entire body/system, it is also not used often due to fear and apprehension.
I know this about my clients so when I am working with anxious people, I don't talk about breathing. Rather I breathe slowly myself while we are together and I know that we will attune our breathing. We will, as organisms, both breathe slower.
This attunement is entirely natural: when I hear a polka being played, I want to get up and dance. When I hear a waltz, I want to slow down
Think about being around people who are calm and relaxed. Do you find yourself relaxing also, without trying?
So if you are trying to slow things down, be more calm and relaxed, try these things:
put on quiet, slow music and just sit and listen
maybe moving slowly to that music or sound feels better to you
sit with someone who is calm and relaxed: after five minutes what do you notice about your body?
if you have kids, sit by their beds at night for maybe 10 minutes and just watch them breathe. This can be totally relaxing,
If breathing 'scares' you, do something else. Try something else. Because softening and relaxing feel good and are good for our bodies!
