I Am Too Anxious to Attend an Anxiety Support Group!
In 2017 I wrote this short blog to help people get over the fear of registering for the Anxiety Support Group! Read on....
Are you wanting to...longing for, a safe and confidential place to share your anxieties? Your worries? The things that keep you from having, and living, the kind of life you really desire?
And yet, and yet...when an opportunity for healing and change comes your way, you say "No"? What is keeping you from saying "Yes"? What are the concerns you have? The fears?
These thoughts are coming to me as I get ready to offer a 6-week Anxiety Support Group starting August 1st. So let me see if I can address some of these issues/fears:
I won't know anyone. True, chances are you won't. And...everyone of you is in the same boat, including, perhaps, me! Designed over 8 weeks, meeting every other week, each person will have a chance to share, as they choose, whatever is on their minds and in their hearts. By the end of the group, January of 2018, I believe no one will feel like a stranger.
I won't know what to say. Maybe you won't. I know when I get really anxious it is hard for me to think. To process. My brain goes into 'fight or flight' and I cannot think of one thing to say. I am going to teach you T.R.E., a natural and easy way for the body to release stress and tension. Without words. We will begin each meeting with a 15 minute T.R.E. session so that you might...might feel relaxed and calm enough to share. Or NOT-you can always PASS on anything. I do not want anyone to feel forced to share or participate in any way. I don't want to create more anxiety for anyone.
I won't feel safe. I facilitate lots of groups ( 4 people to 30 ), and I know it is very important to feel safe. To feel seen and heard. To know that whatever is shared is confidential. Safety and confidentiality are at the basis of healthy groups. We will spend time the very first night creating a safe container. Everyone gets input and will be heard in this process and, everyone must agree, once we have some ground rules, to follow them each week. And again...you do not HAVE to say anything. Or DO anything. ( Although you might get more out of it and be surprised at how much you have in common with others. )
